The Oscars are just hours away now, and as Jennifer Lawrence is up for Best Actress for a second time, I’ve just gotta cross my fingers for her. I’ve been rooting for Jennifer and the film itself since I first saw it last November (I’ve seen it at least 4 times since, the latest was a trip to the movies last night), and a lot has happened since then.
Silver Linings Playbook and Jennifer have since achieved several awards and nominations, Jennifer having most recently won an Independent Spirit Award. Jennifer has also won a Golden Globe, which the acceptance speech for it got her some negative attention from people who didn’t get the joke (still judging you if you took that seriously, just saying), and she appeared on Saturday Night Live to mixed reviews. Toss in bouts of the flu and pneumonia and more Catching Fire filming, and it’s evident it’s been a crazy couple of months for her.
I’ve seen several of the Oscar movies since and have felt that Jennifer’s performance still wins it for me. Do the Oscar voters agree with me? We’ll see Sunday night. And remember, it’s okay if she doesn’t win. Seriously, no need to be sore if it isn’t Jennifer who wins. I mean, we don’t want to see anyone bad-mouthing a 9 year old for winning. I know it’s cliche, but it really is an honor just to be nominated. And remember to ignore those pesky catfight rumors. But hey, we’ve still got high hopes.

Her biggest competition will be Riva, who won the BAFTA and gave a stellar performance. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for Jen, though.
I really wouldn’t mind if Riva won, she gave a fantastic and very brave performance. She and Jennifer both deserve an Oscar. I just hope Jessica Chastain doesn’t get it – not because of her, she was fine in the role, I just don’t think the character/role or the movie have any particular depth. Wallis was good, but it’s not an Oscar-worthy performance (more like a Best Young Artist performance). The only one I haven’t seen is Watts’ “The Impossible”.
This is the first time I’ve actually seen all of the Best Picture nominees. My only hope is that the lack of directing nominations means that neither Argo nor Zero Dark Thirty will win. I would be OK with any of the other 7 movies winning, since I think they’re all excellent in different ways (SLP and Life of Pi are probably those I personally liked the best), but sadly it seems like Argo is likely to win. I think that those two are average movies that are only getting attention due to their subject matter (and in Argo’s case, making the Hollywood feel great about itself), though Argo is somewhat better since it’s at least entertaining enough, unlike ZDT which really bored me. I found myself thinking “OK, so they’re recreating (truthfully or not) what happened… but why should I care? Just kill him already and finish the damn movie”. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not American, but Lincoln is also about American history and it’s really interesting and engaging. I thought Lincoln would turn out to be dull and similarly overrated as those two, but it was surprisingly funny, witty, interesting and not melodramatic or bloated.
She has gotten so many awards lately that I think it has definitely increased her chances of an Oscar. I guess I don’t know exactly how the Oscars work. I know that her peers vote. But does every Academy member vote on every single movie? Because that would be a LOT of movies to watch before voting.
If Jennifer doesn’t win Best Actress, I’ll lose the little faith I still hold for AMPAS.
She deserves it on all accounts. Period.
I saw most of the performances up for best actress. Did not see Rivas (not in to subtitles much). Out of all the movies I really enjoyed SLP the best. Lincoln was ok and a little long. Argo was good and I enjoyed it. Zero Dark Thirty was good. The rest were ok with memorable performances . I thought Jenifer did a great job and the movie took us on a journey that was unpredictable and complex. Some the other movies were like a quickly written book, too easy and very predictable plot. David O Russell changed the screen play up from the book that I was like wow that was not expected. I liked the movie better than the book. I will keep my fingers crossed for Jennifer but hey Hollywood loves her and she will be around for a long time. She has cleaned up this awards season and I am sure movie people are ALL taking a look at her now. Like you Twiddify I have seen SLP four times as well. All of my kids as well as my best friend got taken to the movie by me. After I saw the screening I knew SLP would be up for Gold this award season. This little Indy film has many of my friends talking from the romantic side of it to the mental health issues it brings to light.
Now that it’s official…all hail OSCAR WINNER Jennifer Lawrence! =D
