Mockingjay Part 2 Extras Excitement

As caught up as we are in the prospect of old school, never-before-seen footage coming our way in The Hunger Games 4-Film Collection, it’s also pretty damn exciting that we’re getting Mockingjay Part 2 special features for the first time, as well!

Today, we got not one but TWO Mockingjay Part 2 DVD extras to drool over. Observe!

First, check out the story behind Johanna’s bald cap!

We love this. LOVE IT. Why? Because Jena Malone was ready to go all way. She wanted to shave her head for ten months for five scattered days of shooting. But when that was shot down, she went through a pretty grueling bald cap process to get an authentic look. Holy fuck, that is a ride or die kind of chick if I’ve ever seen one!

We’re really glad Johanna was bald. It wasn’t necessary, but it was a stark reminder of the torture the Rebellion members received in Capitol. So bless Francis and Jena for going there, seriously!

Of course, most of these sites are trying to keep their exclusive by refusing to include embeddable video– Get ads on video embeds and get with the times, CraveOnline– so you can click the picture below to watch the second clip about the mutt attack!

While we admittedly don’t pay THE MOST attention to set design, it’s really cool to see how, even though the scene obviously required special effects, a lot of the shriek-worthy fear we experienced was actually due to a wonderful location and expert lighting. And DAMN was it effective!

There’s always a few humorous gems behind the scenes and sadly those are missing here. But fear not! We’ll devour them and every other moment when the Blu-ray comes!

Shiny New DVDs: Mockingjay Part 2 and the 4-Film Collection!

Seriously guys, how good is JJ? She posted late last week with some hopes for the Mockingjay Part 2 DVD release and while didn’t come true yet, there were some goodies that have been confirmed!

First, let’s talk about the actual DVD release for the movie that just happened, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2!

MJ2_BD3d

Per usual, there’s lots of behind the scenes goodness, including commentary with Francis and Nina (none with the cast! *weeps*), the “Pawns No More” Making Of documentary, and lots of photo marketing goodness.

Also featured is a look into The Hunger Games: The Exhibition that has us reeeeal nervous because the camersa were there when we were there for the preview but OMG NO OUR FACES WEREN’T READY WE SWEAR! And sadly, that terrible “Jet to the Set” special that spent more time on a Real Housewife of Atlanta than the cast is there as well.

Overall, we’re very excited to grab to final DVD. BUT THEN BUT THEN BUT THEN…

The 4-Film Collection, you guys. THE 4-FILM COLLECTION.

THG_4Movie_beautyShot_BD

It’s like a freaking buffet spread of Hunger Games deliciousness!

Particularly, THIRTEEN never-before-seen scenes. Twelve from The Hunger Games (here’s hoping for all the ones JJ mentioned) and one from Catching Fire. So much new information! Let’s not kid ourselves, half of it is probably hallucinations, dream sequences, and the like, but WE CARE NOT. We want it all.

On top of that. there are two new featurettes: “Picturing Panem” and “Capitol Cuisine.” We’re guessing that the first one is about the early visualizations of the Capitol. The second is a little clearer, focusing on all the crazy foods Suzanne Collins created in the books, though we don’t think they were necessarily emphasized in the movies.

That being said, we don’t expect that this is the actual DIAMOND MAC DADDY EDITION we’re all hoping for. This is just the initial collection, but it’s not going to give away all the secrets of the final film with that DVD coming out. Oh no! This is just a start. There’s gonna be an anniversary edition in the future that’s gonna make us cry fat happy tears, even more so than this baby.

Will you snag Mockingjay Part 2 or the 4-Film Collection? It all drops on March 22nd!

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Liam Hemsworth’s CUT BANK Is a Gritty Conspiracy Thriller

The Hunger Games world is mostly quiet these days, but a Hunger Games actor still has a big movie release happening today! Liam Hemsworth’s Cut Bank is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital HD today. We’re celebrating with a review AND something for you!

First off, let’s freak out over the amazing cast: Liam Hemsworth stars alongside Teresa Palmer (Cut Bank is not to be confused with Love and Honor, another straight-to-DVD release they co-starred in), but we’ve also got John Malkovich, Billy Bob Thorton, Bruce Dern, Oliver Platt, and Michael Stuhlbarg on board. And it’s easy to see why all these great actors signed on– This film has a definite allure to it!

cut-bank-poster-11Dwayne McLaren (Hemsy!) wants nothing more than to get out of his small idealistic Americana hometown– Cut Bank, Montana. While recording a video of his girlfriend (Palmer), the two witness the brutal murder of an elderly postman, Georgie Wits (Dern). Better yet, they catch it on tape. Now, Dwayne is set to gain $100,000 in reward money from a Postal Service agent (Platt). It doesn’t take long to realize that there’s much more to the video than anyone suspects and the local sheriff (Malkovich) isn’t equipped to deal with the first murder that’s ever occurred in town.

Even worse? The loss of the postman and his parcels has incidentally set off the only person in town who’s a genuine threat to society.

In the DVD special features, screenwriter Robert Patino describes Cut Bank as a 70s-style conspiracy thriller. It’s pretty accurate. It’s not just about the grand scheme. It’s about the unexpected ways that scheme can go horribly, horribly wrong. But the movie has its hits and misses– There’s some amazing character acting, but it starts off slow. Things pick up and get intriguing, but you never quite get the big Tarantino-style “OMG WHAT JUST HAPPENED?” moment that you anticipate. Still, there’s a decent amount of suspense and twists that’ll have insanely curious to see how to all plays out.

With the actors involved, it’s no surprise that the characters are superb. The script goes for dark humor and doesn’t always hit the mark, but the actors make the best of it and develop unique, fun characters. Extra points go to Michael Stuhlbarg– an actor whose name you might not know but whose face you probably recognize– for expertly playing the creepiest creepster in existence, Derby Milton. The performances and the aesthetics of Cut Bank really made the kitschy town stuck in the 1950s come to life and an amusing, believable way.

Cut Bank is plenty enjoyable, all crime and conspiracy with a touch of modern-day Western. It’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you want to see Liam Hemsworth play a more in-depth, calculating role than Gale Hawthorne.

Want to watch? Well, you could win the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Combo Pack!

The Unofficial Mockingjay Part 1 Drinking Game

Now that we’ve all likely got our hands on a copy of Mockingjay Part 1, it’s time to return to an old tradition!

We realized today that we never did one of these for Catching Fire (Here’s The Hunger Game version), which is an utter shame because we really would have loved a complete set! Still, it’s time to grab your DVD or Digital HD copy and prepare foooorrrr…

THE UNOFFICIAL MOCKINGJAY PART 1 DRINKING GAME

The way it's meant to be!

The way it’s meant to be!

Required:

Your poison of choice (or, you know, water..)

One regular glass

One shot glass

An underwhelming sense of dignity

Take a gulp when…

Someone references “The Mockingjay”

Boggs escorts Katniss or alerts her that she needs to be somewhere

Prim gives Katniss sympathetic doe eyes

Katniss totally loses it over Peeta

Someone talks about Beetee breaking through the Capitol’s systems

President Snow has a shiny new scene

Cressida’s role is much bigger than it was in the books

Tears glisten in a character’s eyes

Buttercup is more endearing than the humans in the scene

OBVIOUSLY.

OBVIOUSLY.

Down the glass or bottle when…

Gale gets indignant on behalf of the rebellion

Something blows up. ANYTHING.

Sam Claflin’s British accent breaks through a bit

Take a shot when…

Coin gives a speech and you think “I can see right through your act, bitch!”

In your opinion, the scene in question could have totally been traded out for one of the deleted scenes

Mockingjay Part 1 Lulz: Rolling Dad Commentary

I had a completely different post planned for today, but then something spectacular happened. I watched the Mockingjay Part 1 DVD with my dad.

emma-stone-excited

See, my dad likes the series but is by no means an expert. He probably hasn’t watched Catching Fire since last spring and missed Mockingjay Part 1 in theaters, so this was his first viewing. Also, my dad is pretty big on personal commentary whenever he watches a movie from the comfort of his own couch and his attention skills are not the best.

So today, inspired by “Things My Husband Says During Outlander” (if you watch that series, READ THESE! They’re way funnier.) I decided to write down a few of the gems and share them with you. Because I’m pretty sure everyone know someone who does this!

PSH:
“Oh wow, he’s in this? How much is he in this?”

White rose:
“What the hell does that mean?

2581126223637204660bpdvmTncSnow gets cut while shaving:
“Yeah, now you got it coming, ya bastard.”

“I wonder where Peeta bread is?”

Dream sequence:
“Wow. She is actually a lot taller than him.”

Negotiation scene:
“I’m not sure why the critics made this movie not sound so good. I’m already sure it’s a lot better than the critics made it sound.”

Effie:
“Wait… she’s bald. Is she bald?”

Gale:
“Now is that one Chris? I can never tell.”

Looking at Cinna’s Mockingjay sketches:
“Wait, who’s dead? The bird?”

Propo filming:
“Heh heh. This is just like being in the movies. Except you’re bad!”

Haymitch and Effie eye lock:
“You gotta like them two, anyway.”

Beetee:
“Oh he can’t walk anymore, huh? … I need a refresher.”

Arrows:
“It’s funny how she never runs out of arrows.”

“The red ones must be very expensive.”
*looks at my redhead mother*
“You cost me a lot of freakin’ money all the time.”

“Don’t expect much chit chat, he’s an Avox”:
“An Avox? What does that mean? Is he some sort of asshole?”

“He must be on a puree diet.”

Shooting at Capitol bombers:
“Pretty boy can’t make the shot.”

2-mockingjay30f-1-web

District 7:
“How the hell do they climb the trees so fast?!”

Hunting
“What is that? A horse? An elk. It could be a deer, but it’s got the hairy neck. An elk.”

“That ain’t right. You ain’t gonna cheat on Peeta bread, are you? Poor Peeta.”

Katniss/Gale kiss:
*aggravated moan*

Attack on the dam
“Trying to figure out what’s happening here.. Oh, oh! That there is gonna get blown up!”

“Mmm hmm Mr. President.. your time is getting short!”

The Attack on 13:
“District 13 had all this stuff [weapons, defenses, etc] all that damn time?!”

“What’s with all the water? Are they (District 13) purposefully trying to kill everybody?”

The hatch shown in the Crazy Cat scene: “Hey look! They got portable water!”

The Rescue:
“I don’t think this is gonna work out well. I have a funny feeling. We’ve setting up for the next movie.”

“Urgh.. he’s probably already dead.”

Other victors: “Wait.. they were in there too? Where did they all come from?”

The End
*Peeta’s back stiffens*
“Uh oh.”
*Peeta attacks*
“Uh oh!”

“Wow. He really has gone cuckoo.”

At Least He’s Team Peeta, Amirite?

It’s DVD Day!

It’s the big happy day for fans in the US, Canada, and Australia. The day we can own a physical copy of Mockingjay Part 1 (as opposed to just those digital versions). We at Victor’s Village opted for the Target 3 disc set because IT’S GOT THE MOST STUFF. And the art is pretty too.

mockingjay dvd

When you remove the plastic overwrap with the Mockingjay, you have the Mockingjay just in black. As it should be.

kat

Our hearts hurt with the choice of the “It’s the things we love most that destroy us” quote. So mean.

Gale

Yes, Gale, “Everyone has choices.” Your choices are going to take you down and interesting path soon.

cressida

We love this picture but question the insistence to make Cressida the third featured character in the set. Natalie Dormer’s great, and of course they made Cressida look really badass, but the role was still pretty small. Whatever, she looks cool.

We’re still digging in to all the bonus features, but I have already checked out the audio commentary with Francis and Nina, and it’s definitely worth your time. Lots of fun details about the making of the movie.

Enjoy your weekend watching!

JJ

Beakless Beakniss

As DVD time approaches, we’ve made a small but exciting discovery.

See, we love it when it seems the movie studios are listen to what’s being said in the fandom, and in this one case, they seemingly listened and corrected themselves.

Just before the release of Mockingjay Patt 1 came a poster that became know in the fandom as “Beakniss”:

BxLzOO2CQAIVTRD

Named so because of the giant and painfully obvious beak from the Mockingjay pin protruding out of Katniss’ neck. It upped the WTF factor of the poster by about 60%. We weren’t quite sure how that sucker made it past an entire creative design team and into production, but it did.

To make matters worse, the Beakniss image was the main promo for the film. So Katniss had a beak stabbing through her neck in movie theater cutouts, giant banners… everywhere!

Thankfully, as DVD time rolled around, someone at Lionsgate realized how painful the image is. Because the regular Blu-ray/DVD cover is…

the-hunger-games-mockingjay-part-1-blu-ray-cover-46

BEAKLESS BEAKNISS!

Perhaps a lot of people won’t notice or care, but to us, it’s a major relief. We’re glad we don’t have to stare that poorly placed background beak down every time we want to watch the blu-ray!

BTS and Video Clip Virgin

I haven’t seen ’em, and “’em” would be the myriad of Behind The Scenes pictures, and video clips that have been circulating the internets for the last several days. Yeah, clearly there’s something wrong with me, but the thing is– I don’t want to see ’em.

Call my crazy, but I kind of like the element of surprise, and not having to see the infamous Finnick In B8csmw4IYAA9RpIHis Undies scene on my iPhone… on Instagram, is more than a let down– dare I say it, but anti-climactic. See I’ve got this thing in this room in my home, it’s called a Blu-ray player, and it’s attached to this other thing called a High Definition Television set. And there’s this amazing thing that happens when you put this other thing, consequently called a Blu-ray disc, into the Blu-ray player. I think you might have got the idea! I’d much rather not see anything new concerning Mockingjay Part 1 in an inferior platform in comparison to the said technology that lives comfortably somewhere in my home, whereas my cell phone mostly lives in my pocket. Tiny Finnick will not do, I say! He must be at least bigger than my palm!

All that being said, I do know that releasing all these images and videos is to create buzz, and buzz is good– even though I think we all know that no matter what Lionsgate does to promote the release of Mockingjay Part 1 on disc, they’re going to make boat loads of money. BOAT LOADS.

We are moths to the flame! Bring on the release all ready, my Blu-ray player is humming at the ready!
