The Samsung Exclusive Trailer – Part 2

Here we go again…

We knew that the Samsung partnership with Lionsgate was continuing through Part 2, we just hoped that things WOULD BE DIFFERENT (BETTER) THIS YEAR. This morning, QuarterQuell.org discovered the Samsung users website was announcing another Samsung event at Best Buy stores for the weekend of October 2.

exclu trailer

So let’s break it down. Over the weekend of Oct 2, you’ll be able to go to Best Buy stores to watch the Final Mockingjay Part 2 trailer before it debuts anywhere else. You can also try the Hunger Games Virtual Reality Experience via the Samsung GearVR.

If you were around the fandom last year during San Diego Comic Con time, you’ll remember that Samsung/Best Buy/Lionsgate did a similar type exclusive preview weekend of the Mockingjay Part 1 teaser trailer. Instead of just dropping the FIRST LOOK at Mockingjay Part 1 online for all fans, Best Buy stores with a Samsung Experience shop had the trailer to preview on Samsung tablets. Samsung was able to buy the goodwill of US fans who came to that preview weekend with free movie tickets and Mockingjay pins, but the rest of the world (and the US that didn’t have a special Samsung Experience Store Best Buy nearby) were left out. It created a lot of negativity in the fandom. So much angst. It was not a fun time in the fandom, and made what should have been a happy time – THE FIRST MJ1 TRAILER very sour.

SO WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS AGAIN? WITH THE FINAL TRAILER? There’s plenty of other ways to extend a Samsung/Mockingjay partnership – they even have a good one as a part of this weekend event. The demo of the Hunger Games Virtual Reality Experience could be pretty fun – and the GearVR isn’t even on sale to the public yet so there isn’t any OTHER WAY to see this content. So if you want to give a demo of your snazzy VR device with a new Hunger Games app, that’s cool. We know you can’t make that accessible to everyone in the world. That’s A NICE EXTRA. WHY COULDN’T YOU LEAVE IT AT THAT????

Doing a trailer exclusive like this again – for the FINAL TRAILER is just unnecessary and mean. The response from the fandom last year was clear. Don’t create that ill will again, the week tickets go on sale!  There’s only 2 months left to go. We want happiness in the fandom, not angst. Why knowingly create it?

There’s a lot of question marks in this post, but we still feel like there aren’t enough.

REACTION POST: MockingJay Part 2 Trailer #2

We have another trailer, so you know what that means! It’s time for a Victor’s Village reaction post!

This one starts off on a bit of a sad note– You’ll notice that Them There Eyes is no longer with us. She’s stepped away from the Internet for a while to focus on some real life commitments, but we still love her to death and wish her all the best!

As for JJ and The Girl With The Pearl, We March Together with you through the glorious battlefield of fandom (See what we did there?!) And so, the reaction post goes on!

Be aware that this baby contains spoilers if you haven’t read the books! Also, there’s lots to it, so be sure to hit the “READ MORE” link if you’re viewing from the main page!

WHY ARE WE MARCHING?!

The Girl With The Pearl: Let’s start with this: The trailer has a name, which is not always something we’ve seen in the past. What do you think of We March Together?

Are we referring to this *cough* TOTALLY NATURAL marching scene?

Are we referring to this *cough* TOTALLY NATURAL marching scene?

JJ: Eh, it’s got that revolution vibe, which is good. And there is that scene of Katniss strutting down to “get” Snow. But… is does it add much to the actual trailer? Not sure. It feels like something they did to track views better online actually.

TGWTP: Being the picky bastard that I am, I couldn’t help but think about how they NEVER march together

JJ: Lol. But Paylor wants them too.

TGWTP: All these District are essentially using the same guerilla warfare tactics. No marching! Katniss sure never marched anywhere with anyone

JJ: Katniss doesn’t march with anyone, you’re right. It’s more of an afterthought of something that sounds good for trailer title.

TGWTP: It should be called We Want To March Together, then! Though it doesn’t have the same ring to it.

JJ: Marching together is for winners!

THE SNOW-DOWN

The greenhouse! The mansion in the distance! Hoooooly....

The greenhouse! The mansion in the distance! Hoooooly….

TGWTP: But I suppose the title doesn’t matter, because man… did this start with Snow’s final conversation with Katniss?!

JJ: Yes, I think they did. That’s one of the amazing thing about both the teaser and this trailer. They mush the timeline all around, yet it presents the story beautifully!

TGWTP: It’s not something non-readers would recognize, but for books fans… OOF! You can hear the raggedness of his voice, plus the image of Katniss approaching the greenhouse…

JJ: If you’ve got Donald Sutherland, use that’s man’s voice for all it’s worth. What a chilling open.

RECITING AND RECYCLING

TGWTP: And then we get Paylor, which is just so welcome. I kinda worry that characters like hers will be written off, but she’s prominent in a trailer!

Pay attention! Paylor knows what's up!

Pay attention! Paylor knows what’s up!

JJ: I love that they are building her up. In the books, we don’t really see her rise because it happens away from Katniss, but I like how they’re really going to show her as a leader. Will make the ending make a lot more sense. And it was a great way to explain the plot of the movie quickly too.

TGWTP: Yes! We saw the tar before, now the people who haven’t read the books know what that’s about. And it establishes Paylor as a tactical leader.

JJ: Just in those few secs of her speech it solidifies her credibility as a leader. Good stuff

TGWTP: I did kinda laugh at the beginning of her speech though, because we get a quick look at Plutarch, Effie, and Haymitch– our only look at all three from this trailer– and it’s THE SAME CUT from the last trailer. We couldn’t find three different shots of those three?!

JJ: Yeah, bah, come on! There were a bunch of those reused shots.

TGWTP: Oh, I get that. We got plenty of recycling of scenes but that was so very obvious because it was a montage-y sequence.

THE FUTURE STARTS WITH REFERENCES OF BOOK LOVERS

JJ: But can we talk about the timing of when she talks about THE FUTURE STARTS TOMORROW.

TGWTP: YES. YES WE CAN. Because we see the future there! *flails*

The moment at which we all squealed!

The moment at which we all squealed!

JJ: That was just for us fans. Thanks to whoever cut that. You could think that was just a natural thing… but WE KNOW. A lot of the trailer has those type of fan-friendly moments. So thanks, guys!

TGWTP: Yes, somebody definitely said “Let’s throw THIS in here real quick for the big fans.”

TGWTP: And there were a couple moments where everything was combined to inflict maximum hurt, so let’s discuss those. Katniss talks about nothing good being safe while Snow is alive as she dances with Prim.

JJ: Yup, another moment taken from the teaser, but understandable since it’s the core of what she’s fighting for. And we need to make that end hurt more.

TGWTP: Gale talking about how Katniss needs to make her one shot count. URGH. That got to me.

JJ: Oooh, I didn’t pick up on that.

Tigris' hair: Cockblocking Gale's lines since last week

Tigris’ hair: Cockblocking Gale’s lines since last week

TGWTP: It’s very quick. She says she only has one shot. He says “Let’s make it count”

JJ: Oh yes, when he’s in Tigris’s shop. I was distracted by Tigris’s hair! But “making it count.” Ugh.

TGWTP: Exactly. Those are probably two different scenes (and yes, it’s Tigris!) but they’re blended for the best effect to reference Coin’s death later.

JJ: Messing with the timeline again! But it works. Then you have Peeta’s part.

TGWTP: I think it’s NO COINCIDENCE that they’re showing lizard mutts while Peeta is talking about Snow owning their deaths and how the deaths matter if Katniss defeats Snow.

JJ: “Our lives were never ours…” *tears* Finnick battling the lizards was a great shot.

TGWTP: That is an incredible line. Screenwriting prowess, ftw!

The Mockingjay Part 2 Trailer: Reactions on the Fly

No, this is not this official bomb diggity trailer reaction post we do for every film, sadly. Getting a bunch of busy ladies together to chat takes time, but it’s coming!

Here's a hug. We all need one!

Here’s a hug. We all need one!

In the meantime, let’s discuss some off the cuff reactions!

For me, this was probably the best trailer for the series we’ve seen so far (followed by the second Catching Fire trailer, if you’re curious!) Some really awful fans have been jumping all over Nina and Francis on Twitter demanding that this trailer be freaking fantastic because they’d had to wait so long– as if Nina and Francis control the release of trailers– and now those two can be smug. It WAS freaking fantastic!

We got a major sentimental scene, Finnick and Annie’s wedding, for which the visuals were gorgeous. We see the extreme sister love between Katniss and Prim. And then the tension seeps in and we remember that it is NOT ALL GOOD. War is happening, people are rallying, Katniss is dressed up as the Mockingjay, and Effie and Haymitch are there to attempt to be reassuring but probably kinda failing.

Then there’s the hug continuation that hit all the feels, as noted here by a Twitter user:

Shot through the heart!

Shot through the heart!

From there, the action begins! Did anyone else think the Star Squad was running from a crazy huge deluge of oil when those set photos from Paris hit the Internet? WE SURE DIDN’T.

Altogether, it was an exciting, uplifting, heartbreaking, INSANE experience to watch the first trailer for the final film.

However, there has been one thing pointed out to us that we can’t un-see. Something straight out of the Catching Fire trailers:

THIS NOVEMBER
COMES THE EVENT
THE WORLD HAS BEEN WAITING FOR

We mean… both “events” have that November release and the world is waiting / waited for both (not the whole world, of course. There’s undoubtedly some countries out there where people do not give a daaaaamn about these films.) The lettering is the same in each but the background is different– CF is black, MJ2 is crimson with little embers floating. Still, are there NO OTHER WAYS to say “Everyone is anticipating this movie coming in November” without recycling?! Are we budgeting the biggest franchise Lionsgate has?

Still, we’ll try to let it go because all the other stuff.

Mockingjay Part 2 Trailer Speculation Shootout

Look, we get it. Waiting for an anticipated movie trailer sucks. Waiting for a Hunger Games trailer is perhaps even worse because Lionsgate is obsessed with keeping it sooper sekret right up until the day of release, whenever the high hell that may be.

But seriously guys, stick a fork in us… because we’re done.

THE OBSESSIVE TRAILER TALK IS TOO FREAKING MUCH.

It started off pretty chill with the Age of Ultron rumors. Someone said the Mockingjay Part 2 trailer would come out in front of Marvel’s surefire smash, which was easy to believe because regardless of whether it’s true or not, Lionsgate would be straight up idiotic is they DIDN’T do this. LG’s upcoming release Age of Adaline was also named as a potential suitor for the trailer. Then somebody asked Lionsgate and they denied it all, and the people who are new to this rodeo actually believe Lionsgate’s denial without question. Hint, folks! LIONSGATE NEVER TELLS THEIR FANS ANYTHING UNTIL MAYBE A COUPLE DAYS IN ADVANCE, IF WE’RE LUCKY. They deny all rumors straight up to that point. Don’t know why they think this method is useful, but they do it anyway!

Speaking of overdone...

Speaking of overdone…

Then somebody confirmed with a source that the trailer isn’t happening until summer, while somebody else confirmed with a source that the trailer IS indeed coming with Age of Ultron/Age of Adaline. THE AGES, if you will. All these sources, by the way, tend to be movie theater employees. So someone in there is completely fucking clueless and just making answers up.

And somebody in South America has now posted a trailer list for Age of Ultron without a Mockingjay Part 2 trailer on there, so now we’re supposedly meant to believe that the rest of world isn’t getting it either because that one theater isn’t with that one particular film? Because all theaters always show the same things internationally and trailers never end up under codes names and these lists never change, right?!

Then the superfans and even some fansites (though most have wised up to this by now) are posting and retweeting and commenting on every. freaking. rumor. Sometimes we’re pretty sure they just want to sound like they’re in the know. It’s enough to make us want to tune out any mention of the trailer.

Look, we honestly don’t know whether the trailer is coming with Age of Ultron or not. We don’t believe any of you on either side anymore. You know when we’ll know? WHEN IT HAPPENS. And all this constant, rampant speculation ain’t gonna make it happen any faster.

So let’s try some patience, okay guys? We know it’s new to everyone, but it’s time.

Sorry, Temporarily Possessed By The Spirit of Lewis Black This Time,

Getting Trailer Twitchy

560x829xfirst-poster-692x1024.jpg.pagespeed.ic.88GNMkj7CVWe’re getting closer and closer to the time when we all assume there will be a Mockingjay Part 2 teaser trailer.  (Basically we’re assuming it comes out the week of April 20th and yes we know that’s a dangerous game considering the unpredictability of last year). We’re going to keep the faith and hope it happens anyway.

Of course, in this fandom, the teaser trailer itself must be teased, so by our math this means –

STUFF NEXT WEEK. PLEASE LET THERE BE STUFF NEXT WEEK. WE NEED SOMETHING!

What stuff? Well, since we learned our lesson last year about expecting too much too early we’re not even gonna go there with a wish list. We just hope that a teaser trailer release date is announced next week. Maybe a little gif/quick video tease/still. Oh shit, we started a wish list. Stopping now. Please at least just announce it next week. Yes, that will give us something to look forward to in the days ahead.

But of course, if Lionsgate would be so kind as to relaunch Hunger Games Explorer with some new content, that’d be even sweeter. (Ugh, MUST STOP THE WISH LIST).

In the meantime, we’ll be here, waiting for the cool stuff to go down.

Let’s get the positive vibes going.

JJ

Don’t Blink! Trailer Teaser Time

Happy trailer eve!

Tomorrow we finally, FINALLLLLLLLY get the trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. “About damn time” doesn’t even begin to say how much this trailer is needed, but we’ve already talked about that.

Instead, we’re going to discuss the mini-previews of the trailer that have been released in anticipation of the big day.

First off.. Don’t blink. Not because there’s weeping angels or anything.

5x04_Time_of_the_Angels_174

Just kidding, there totally are weeping angels here. Just to make you aware that we are THAT serious right now! (Non-Whovians: These things can kill you in the blink of an eye. Pay attention to the previews!)

These bits are about 10-15 seconds, but how much is actual footage?

3 seconds of footage, 7 seconds of President Snow quotage.

TOMORROW – #TheMockingjayLives

A post shared by The Hunger Games (@thehungergames) on

2 seconds of footage. Almost 3. 2 1/2, to be fair.

The trailer is short, so we suppose it should be no surprise that even their trailer previews are short. Most movies give you a solid 5 to 10 seconds of actual footage in mini-teasers. Buuuut we’re nitpicking because we’re desperate for more.

There’s really not much to comment on, but we are liking what we see. Katniss looks positively horrified as she discovers the beautiful white rose amongst the dead flowers in her abandoned house. Katniss and Gale fighting off Capitol predators together in District 8 is pretty much the only form of Katniss/Gale “togetherness” we can get behind.

And that right there is the big point:
The campaign for this movie has been very slow and some fans are losing enthusiasm, but we’re still pretty damn sure the movie will be among the best for the year. Why? Because the movie was made by Lawrence Squared, J-Hutch, Hemsy, Nina Jacobson (we don’t have a fun nickname for her), and some of the most celebrated actors out there and the promotional packaging, well… isn’t. In the end, the overall experience feels dimmed, but the movie will probably still leave us all like “OHMYSWEETGOODNESS DID YOU SEE THAT?”

And hopefully the trailer makes us super excited too. Because if we’re only getting one full trailer, it better be freaking glorious.

Looking For To Basking In The Glory With You (Hopefully),

The Girl With The Pearl

1 Minute, 45 Seconds

We all really got our hopes up that there was FINALLY a trailer yesterday, but instead we got a countdown to a trailer. Better than nothing, right? The trailer is still coming and while we’ll admit that our enthusiastic nature has waned during the waiting game, we know we’ll be psyched once we actually see it.

We got one good still from three seconds of footage, at least!

We got one good still from three seconds of footage, at least!

However, the news about the trailer that came out that day was pretty bummerific too.

First, the news that the trailer was only going to be 1 minute 45 seconds long.

Yes, NATO guidelines state trailers can’t be longer than 2 minutes after October 1 and this trailer will play in theaters after that time. So we looked up a ton of other movies coming out in November– because all of them already have trailers at this point, some for months. While many of them have a trailer that’s less than two minutes, almost all of them also have a trailer that is MORE than two minutes. Because most movies introduce at least two trailers, one of which is “international” and doesn’t have to strictly adhere to NATO guidelines as long as it makes theaters in the rest of the world happy (which is apparently easier.)

Which brings us to point two: An international distributor let it spill yesterday that this would be the FINAL trailer, then backtracked a bit and said it was the only “full” trailer. What does that mean? Ohhh.. THIS IS THE LONGEST TRAILER WE ARE GOING TO GET. And probably the only one, because non-full trailers will likely = that 1 minute teaser we already got and 30 second TV spots.

tumblr_mnrj6vEpEo1spg0bjo1_500

DO YOU THINK I LIKE POSTING FRUSTRATION GIFS, EVEN IF THEY’RE DISNEY?!

I DON’T!

*briefly meditates* Okay… okay… I think I can talk about it some more.

It’s really hard not to get bummed. We love Lionsgate for bringing The Hunger Games to the screen. But when you have a campaign THIS BIG and it gets delayed and whittled down to as little as possible, it isn’t fun anymore for the fans. Just like Merida up there, it gets us frustrated because we’re being sold short.

Yes, we’re going to see that movie no matter what the advertising, essentially. WE’LL GIVE YOU OUR MONEY. In return, can you give us more promotional footage than say, Dumb and Dumber To? We think we deserve that much for all the amazing records, attention, and profit we’ve given your company over the past couple years. Just sayin’.

“Shut Up And Take My Money” Is a Meme, Not A Suggestion,

TRAILER REACTION: Our Leader The Mockingjay

The first traditional trailer for THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 is finally here!

That means two things:

  1. Congratulations Glenn, the winner of our Third Anniversary Guess The Trailer contest! He won a Catching Fire fan camp poster signed by Josh Hutcherson, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, and Jeffrey Wright!
  2. OMG IT’S TRAILER REACTION TIME!

So watch the trailer again and prepare for pure, exuberant fangirl reaction!

Remember, our reaction posts get kinda long, so most of this baby is under the cut! Also.. SPOILERS. DUH. (All screencaps courtesy of Jabberjays.net!)

Our-Leader110

Yep. A little haunting.

IN WHICH THE TRAILER DARKENS OUR SOULS
The Girl With The Pearl: Let’s start with the usual– describe the trailer in one word!
There Them Eyes: Teasing
JJ: You took mine… I’ll say appropriate?
TGWTP: I’ll go with haunting. Which is not my usual direction with these, because trailers usually make me giddy.
TTE: PSH
JJ: Ok haunting is better But for me, it did its job. It set the stage for what the movie’s about.
TGWTP: Which is scary, messed up shizz
TTE: There’s nothing happy about Mockingjay… ok, wait… yes there are happy points, but it’s not full of as many light moments as the previous stories.
TGWTP: And yes, PSH was a big part of the haunting feel, though not the only reason for it
JJ: But no it didn’t make me dance around the room. It was much more dark. But yes, the subject matter here is a whole different level
TTE: Even the trailer music is somber.

Our-Leader060

EEEEEEEVIL, WE SAY!

PLUTARCH, COIN, AND A SHOWDOWN WITH FICTIONAL CRITICS
TGWTP: Where you surprised that they opened it with Plutarch and Coin?
JJ: Before I was spoiled?
TGWTP: Yes LOL
JJ: Yes, I was surprised with it. But I think it was a good choice. So much of the movie is Plutarch and Coin’s planning.
TTE: Pleasantly surprised. Oh, wait.. I was the only one who was surprised?! This is what happens when you work all day, and don’t spend a lot of that time searching Twitter!
JJ: Twitter is life, ok?
TTE: Twitter is… yeah, I’ll leave my Twitter opinions at the virtual door.
TGWTP: Maybe it’s just me, but I got the feeling Coin will be more openly eeeeevil in the films. She had one line and I was like “YOU DECEITFUL WENCH!”
JJ: Hmm. Yes, maybe they don’t want there to be any doubt that she’s a baddie to avoid confusion for those non-book readers
TGWTP: True. Anyone who sees her as ambivalent or possibly decent will be raging about the end.
TTE: I think having Coin and Plutarch being the first characters we see in the trailer is a very strategic move. It’s playing both on the mythology of the series, which will make fans happy. But to newbies, seeing Julianne Moore and Philip Seymour Hoffman is a draw, sort of like “Whoa, it’s those people! They’re in this… take my money!!”
JJ: TAKE THIS MOVIE SERIOUSLY!
TTE: Stop calling it the next WHATEVER! If you want to call it the next Star Wars… sure, fine– but stop with the teen drama comparisons.
TGWTP: You’re not too cool for fantasy, jackass!
TGWTP: I love yelling at this fictional critic person!
TTE: Fictional critic person looks like a troll and we love to poke him.

Is this just here to piss off Peacekeepers? We doubt many district rebels are airbourne!

Is this just here to piss off Peacekeepers? We doubt many district rebels are airborne!

THIS REBELLION IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE X-FILES
TGWTP: Anywayyyyy… Next, we get district drama! Starting with— How long do you think it would take a person to pull off that crop circle?
TTE: One night.
JJ: It was not people. It was aliens. Plot twist!
TGWTP: OMG DISTRICT 13 IS FULL OF ALIENS MASQUERADING AS PEOPLE!
JJ: Explains a lot, right?
TGWTP: YES.
TGWTP: And how did they get it so accurate?!
TTE: How you make a crop circle accurately: You take geometry in high school, ace it, and then use those skills. I learned this from The X-Files.
JJ: Or aliens.
TGWTP: That was probably the only part of the trailer that allowed me to be happy. Death, depression, distrust, CROP CIRCLE!
JJ: Yes, that was a bit weird now that you mention it, but a cool effect.
TTE: I know I think I texted JJ, like “Well, that crop circle thing is pretty cool.”

Selling the Mockingjay Trailer Release

News came out today that Mockingjay Part 1 would indeed have a presence at San Diego Comic Con. Yay! That’s awesome and great. And expected, since Lionsgate has been saying all along they would be at Comic Con since January. But now we know some of the stars will be there, which is great news for fans who long ago bought tickets thinking that Mockingjay would have a presence at the Con.

But then came the news of the Samsung partnership with Mockingjay Part 1, and how this would affect the LONG AWAITED Mockingjay trailer release.

In a first-of-its-kind experience, fans will have the opportunity to preview the highly-anticipated The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 trailer on the Galaxy Tab S at an exclusive premiere in San Diego during Comic-Con on Friday, July 25. For those outside San Diego, beginning Saturday, July 26, fans can visit participating Samsung Experience Shops within Best Buy locations nationwide throughout the weekend to preview the trailer.

So basically, the trailer will debut at SDCC ONLY on July 25. Then over the weekend you can watch the trailer IF YOU GO TO A BEST BUY STORE. If you’re an international fan, you’re out of luck until next week, when the trailer presumably goes online.

COIN PLUTARCH COMMENT

But don’t fear, fans without SDCC tickets or a Best Buy nearby, I’m sure there will be plenty of low quality versions of the trailer recorded on people’s MOBILE DEVICES that will be uploaded on the internet. It’ll be everywhere. Even if you want to avoid it, there inevitably will be screenshots all over social media that weekend.

To say I’m disappointed in this rollout plan would be a gross understatement. The thing I love about trailer releases is to share the experience online with fans around the world. Last year’s online release of the Catching Fire along with SDCC was such a fun event for fans everywhere. This staggered release RUINS the opportunity to make the release a big worldwide experience. To think that fans are going to ignore the LQ versions that will pop up to wait for Lionsgate to post on YouTube is preposterous. We had evidence of that a few weeks ago when the first teaser leaked. It will not work.

The people that really want to see your movie trailer ASAP are your hardcore fans. So a trailer release should be focused around THE FANS and how you can make that experience special. Instead, the rights to the trailer release were sold to Samsung. We certainly don’t question Lionsgate’s right to money off this movie. That’s why they’re in business and we’re very glad they’ve made these movies! But they really should keep in mind who their customers are. The customers who will see the movie several times, buy the merch, and give the movie buzz care THE MOST about trailer releases! Please stop destroying the experiences that they value and have waited for desperately for a few extra bucks.

And so what should be happy news (A TRAILER IS COMING. FINALLY. YES.) is tinged with sadness.

 JJ
