Inside the Mockingjay Part 2 New York Screening

Tonight, I was super lucky to attend the Mockingjay Part 2 “Special Screening” in New York. Not a premiere, so it didn’t have the huge atmosphere of what we’ve seen in the previous days & weeks, but a huge number of cast attended, as well as Francis Lawrence, Nina Jacobson, and Jon Kilik.

The red carpet was in a tent located outside the AMC Lincoln Square theater. It was filled with press, who missed out on the LA premiere, and the small “fan pen” where I was. As per usual, everyone was very nice about accommodating fan requests for pics and signings. Here are some of my pics in the zoo-like media madness. (You will notice a lack of selfies, I don’t really do selfies, and I doubt you all care so it’s cool).

Then after that, IT WAS ACTUALLY TIME TO SEE THE MOVIE.

It’s been a lot to take in, so we’ll dig into the movie after official release (but spoiler alert, we’re really happy).

Nothing could prepare us for the end, so we didn’t.

More Blue Steel and a Pony

I’m just going to say it, Liam Hemsworth is giving us more Blue Steel, and there’s nothing we can do 10402038_900209023322649_5942859702756527118_nabout it. I think we just have to accept that that’s his face, and until he’s old, like 80 something, and will likely be one of the handsomest old men we’ve ever seen– maybe then he’ll be able to pull his jowly face into some semblance of an expression that’s not his un patented Blue Steel– we’ll just have to deal. Boo hoo, such an unfortunate face to endure! Kidding, he’s hot– everyone with eyes can see it plain as day, and at this point in the game– we’re practically begging for promotional material. Therefore Liam’s expressionless face is a welcome reprieve!

Now it must be addressed, or re-addressed, but Natalie Dormer may prove to be the break out star of Mockingjay Part 1. Or, at least that’s what the posters, and the pictures we’ve been slowly getting are saying to us. Cressida didn’t have a massive part in the novel however, but once again liberties have likely been taken– and we’ll just have to deal, grudgingly or not. I’m not going to argue it to death, because I like Natalie Dormer, and I think Cressida is a character that deserves a little expansion. Plus, um– Natalie’s real purtty.

I think it’s been said before, probably here at Victor’s Village even, perhaps by yours truly–
but Caesar Flickerman reminds me of a My Little Pony. It’s the hair ya’ see? It’s got this pompadour thing going on, and then there’s

You're like a magical pony.

You’re like a magical pony.

the tail bit, and obviously the ever-changing color of it that screams Pony to anyone with a memory for pop culture that goes back further than 1998. I’m not ragging on the choices that the hair and makeup heads came up with, because I think it’s a brilliant choice. Also, bear with me, I totally think that Caesar Flickerman could fit in the court of the Sun King, AKA Louis XIV. The brocade suits, the hair, the colors, the stance.

Maybe Caesar Flickerman is a time traveler?!

Sam and Natalie Do Oxford

We’ve got a good long couple of months to go until Mockingjay Part 1 is released in theatres across the world, so until the day comes when we can all sit back, and cry into our over sized soda cups, whilst sitting in a large dark room with a crowd of strangers– a select few will be privy to the joy of seeing Sam Claflin AKA Finnick Odair, and Natalie Dormer AKA Cressida in an entire other film together. The Riot Club (previously billed as Posh), is a film that Sam and Natalie filmed back in June of 2013, and it was released in its home country of England just this Friday. So far it’s gotten favorable reviews, and it is also holding strong on RottenTomatoes with a 78%, meaning it’s Fresh by their ratings, and thus not a waste of an afternoon at the cinema.

Let’s see, what should a lay person know about The Riot Club before they step up to the box office, plunk down their cold hard cash, and deem to spend a couple of hours with Natalie Dormer, Sam Claflin, Max Irons, Douglas Booth, and Jessica Brown-Findley (yes, Lady Sybil Crawley is in it). Well, Riot Club is based on a play produced and put on in England in 2010, about a fictional dining club. The Riot Club based on the real life Bullingdon Club, the Riot Club is exclusive, and full up with rich, over privileged, white conservative British young men, all students at Oxford University. It’s the kind of story where you watch fictionalized representatives of future captains of industry, and country leaders, act bombastically, treat women badly, and wholly believe that because of their so-called pedigree they are immune to the consequences of the law and society. It’s young white guys with accents, in suits, fucking up, hurting people, thinking they’re going to get away with it, and in the end probably not. Oh, yeah, and one of those young men happens to be portrayed by Sam Claflin, oh– and Natalie’s playing a Lady of the Night.

Can you tell that I’m wavering on this film? I implore all to just… go rent History Boys, you’ll get less pissed off, and learn who James Corden is, AKA the guy taking over for Craig Ferguson on CBS. Or, if you like being eternally frustrated by the glorification of the upper classes acting like jackasses– g’head, go see Riot Club! Yes, I am judging a film purely on its premise, and its trailer, I cannot help it, there is no release date for the US yet, and therefore I’m a little miffed– I’m just being honest!

Maybe the soundtrack will be good? These Boys-Will-Be-Boys films tend to have good soundtracks.

What We Learned From The New Mockingjay Part 1 Stills

In case you missed it, with “The Mockingjay Lives” trailer also came a new edition of Hunger Games Exclusive featuring interviews with Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Natalie Dormer, quick bios of Boggs, Pollux, Castor, and Messalla, and a boatload of new stills.

And oh, there’s messages behind messages about the movies in those stills!

1) Gale and Cressida either hate each other or totally get each other

mockingjay-bg-05

There are a couple pictures of Gale and Cressida together that make us wonder about how other character relationships will be expanded in the TWO parts of Mockingjay (because hell, that’s definitely room to expand things!) Yes, they’re facing away from each other which suggests that this isn’t a romantic twist– THANK GOODNESS— but there’s some sort of deal going on between these two. On one hand, neither looks particularly happy and they won’t look at each other. On the other, they have each others’ back and it seems like these two share a similar ideology that might have them teaming up quite a bit.

Are we just talking nonsense? We’ll find out in two months!

2) Jen’s wig is pretty solid.. except for when there’s running.

mockingjay-site-05-sq

Witness ZEE WIG.

Not bad, right? Flowy, realistic frizz, and a hair line that doesn’t make you facepalm. It’s not very noticeable at all!

Now.. a second glance:

thg-mj1-website-07-katniss-gale

IT JUST GOT SO MUCH MORE NOTICEABLE.

Stills of action scenes are very rarely kind to the characters involved. This just proves it. We probably won’t notice it so much with actual, rolling footage, but this shot is a definite reminder that our homegirl got wigged up for these movies.

3) There’s always that one guy.

Extras. Very rarely does one really catch your eye because they’re out of place, but it happens.

Take the District 8 shot. Almost everyone looks tense, resilient, perhaps even a bit frightened and then… Wait. Is that one guy smirking at her?

thg-mj1-website-03-katniss

It may not be enough to draw most people’s attention, but something about this guy’s look here says “Dude! They put me right next to her! I’m totally going to be in the movie.”

4) Everyone posed in those D13 uniforms (also, see #1)

mockingjay-bg-03

Military or not, we’re guessing everyone had a photo-op in District 13’s gray fatigues, just to reassure us that all the characters hate them and even the pretty ones look a bit drab. Alas, more reassurance that District 13 is a fashionista’s worst nightmare.

5) Someone put a tiny braid in Natalie Dormer’s hair EVERY. DAY.

thg-mj1-website-02-cressida

And yet we can barely manage to braid our own hair without it looks like a rat’s nest. Kudos to Mockingjay’s official braider (we assume that’s their title) and their tiny little hands!

District 13 Rebel Reaction

IT’S MOCKINGJAY PART 1 Posterama! We got six brand spankin’ new posters of what will be Star Squad 451 minus Finnick, Peeta, and Katniss; our first official look at the crew in their gear.

And OF COURSE we’ve got lots of feelings we need to share about all this! BEHOLD!

Rebels_Gale2

Oh, Hemsy! Your eyebrow game is just through the roof in this poster. We just want to brush them methodically for you (as we assume someone else did shortly before this picture was taken.) But we don’t love this image nearly as much as we should.

Book!Gale most certainly had some rage at this point in the story line. Yes, he’s finally made it to the rebels, but Katniss still describes him as intensity and fire when all is said and done. WHERE IS THAT? We all know Liam has epic emo face, but what about the other faces?! This is stern, at best. We want RAAAAAGE! He pulled that off much better in the Catching Fire character poster.

Rebels_Cressida2

Dammit, Natalie Dormer! Even in 1,000 layers including various padding, you still look glam! The last time we tried to look fancy, we still looked worth than that. URGH!

We’ve also discovered the new game we’ll be playing through the rest of the Mockingjay Part 1 promotional period: What exactly is the proper brightness of Cressida’s tattoo? It looked much darker and less green in the trailer, but it might have just been the lighting?

Rebels_Boggs2

YES! THIS! THIS FOREVER AND EVER!

If you can’t tell, we really like this poster! The image alone justifies Mahershala Ali’s casting as Boggs. Intimidating but serene, focused and powerful. The kind of guy who seems serious but has a solid sense of humor underneath it all. He definitely comes off as a leader and we are officially excited!

Rebels_Messalla2

Is it just us or was anyone else thinking Messalla had more of a Capitol flare?

Yes, he’s relocated to District 13, joined the rebellion, and probably toned down has look a bit. But still, we expected more than a bridge piercing and a line tattooed on the bottom lip. That modifications aren’t as “Oh so Capitol!” as we’d expected and despite not believing in the government, Messalla was still culturally Capitol. In the book, he stood out much more drastically. Why change that here?

Rebels_Castor2

When… When did one of the camera guys get kinda sexy?

We understand why it was easier to make Castor and Pollux brothers instead of twins… even though it kills the whole Greek mythology reference but WHATEVS. Still, aren’t these guys the “insects”, the background characters that have their special moments but mostly kinda blend in? How are we supposed to focus on military strategy and political strife when there’s lean muscle and faux hawks in our faces?!

Rebels_Pollux2

Not sure how we feel about ponytail and beard combo, but we’ll let this one slide because its FULTON REED (aka Elden Henson). Pollux is a former Avox and admittedly, the styling choices give the character the look of someone who’s been worn down after seeing too many horrors in the world. Also, you can see their “insect” camera bags really well in this one ad we’re digging it!

Everyone’s Worried About Katniss and I’m like “BUT WHERE IS FINNICK?!”

Our Leader The Mockingjay Gets Charitable

Around mid-to-late July every year, we silently weep to ourselves because we’ve never been to Comic-Con and as such, we’ve never received an awesome limited edition Hunger Games Comic-Con poster like this year’s “Our Leader The Mockingjay”.

image007

Proof o’ signature

But it turns out that there is some good to come out of all that exclusivity: A little bit of charity that will go a long way.

Lionsgate, as it has since the first film, is auctioning off five of those exclusive posters signed by Natalie Dormer, Evan Ross, Elden Henson, Mahershala Ali, and Wes Chatham benefiting the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

image002

Iiiiiiitty bitty signing space!

First thing we noticed? As awesome as the artwork is, it apparently makes the poster REALLY difficult to sign! The design is so busy that everyone’s signature is crammed into the margins.

Still, this whole thing is awesome. When things aren’t exclusive just for the sake of exclusivity, it feels good to know that fans can get their hands on it to support a cause, to get what you want be more than a rabid fan collecting things. Yes, bid starts at $100 and that gives fans with money a distinct advantage, but it least other Hunger Games related charitable projects in the past have used Prizeo in the past, which is raffle based.

Yeah, we’re selfish by nature and want ALL THE THINGS. But not getting them all is helping aid the lives a young people with a frightening disease, in this case, so can we really complain? Sometimes, keeping things rare and valuable is actually a good thing!

Cressida Questions

In our earlier trailer reaction post, we didn’t touch on the first (non-paparazzi) glimpse at Cressida in all her green-vine tattooed glory. It was only a quick shot while in the hospital in 8, but the trailer did give us a hint at what to expect from this character.

Outside of Julianne Moore, casting Natalie Dormer as Cressida was Mockingjay’s only widely-known addition to the cast. And it was a smart move.  While primarily known for her TV roles on Game of Thrones, Elementary, and The Tudors, the woman has a very strong fan following. Casting Dormer motivated me, at least, to pay more attention to this character.

In Mockingjay, Cressida is a Capitol rebel without much of a backstory.  Maybe that’s why I never really paid much attention to her. But I’ve just finished another re-reading of Mockingjay, and there’s a lot for an actress like Dormer to work with. Cressida’s smart and committed to her work (she’ll go after the perfect shot even if it’s dangerous). She’s got the emotional intelligence to manage the competing ideas of Fulvia Cardew, while getting HER OWN project completed. And she sticks her neck out for Katniss more than a few times. So that gives her major points with me.

No casting of Fulvia was ever announced, so my hunch is that they gave Cressida a bit of a promotion, making her more of Plutarch’s right hand.  But I also see some of Fulvia’s lines (see above) being given to Plutarch and Cressida having to work around that.

Cressida TeaserGoing back to those few seconds in the trailer, you immediately notice Cressida’s hair and tattoos. The style gives her that nice mix of badass and sexy, which Dormer knows how to play so well.  The concern playing on her face, as she presumably is watching Katniss walk through the hospital, clues you in that she’s a sympathetic character. Though I have to admit, even with the partially shaved head and tattoos, she looks a little more “normal” than I thought. Granted, she’s in the field, and while living in District 13, looking strongly “Capitol” would be discouraged. I imagine when she’s amongst the other residents of District 13 she stands out too much for their taste, but it’s not quite as strikingly Capitol as I had imagined.

Or maybe that’s the point. We don’t know much of anything about her life before District 13, but as a rebel from the Capitol, we know that there must be elements of that culture, that world, that she does not embrace. She probably never dressed or made herself up in the hyper-Capitol style of Effie. Maybe she did just enough to fit in, while trying to find a way out.

I’m happy I finally started paying attention.

Hunger Games Presents From the Mockingjay Set

It’s Katniss Everdeen’s birthday, but we’re all being spoiled with presents!

New photos AND video from the Mockingjay Part 2 set made their way online over the past day, giving up our first bits of Mockingjay related news in PRETTY MUCH FOREVER.

It started with photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and a whole bunch of Capitol extras on the streets of Paris. Observe!

1200x802xparis-mj-set-33.jpg.pagespeed.ic.kyoWuPR4NV

802x1200xparis-mj-set-28.jpg.pagespeed.ic.fRdcIAWVYF

1024x768xparis-mj-set-18.jpg.pagespeed.ic.KSLf2PTqDG

This bit started pretty hilariously. Media outlets shared plenty of headlines similar to “Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth hide from paparazzi and/or hide costumes behind overcoats!” Of course, we’re sure that like us, most of you noticed immediately that THOSE COATS ARE THEIR COSTUMES because this is the scene were Katniss and Gale disguise themselves to blend into the crowd evacuating to Capitol Square.

Seriously, did they think Liam Hemsworth just happened to have a little shredded leather number that makes him look like Andre the Giant handy?! And Jen’s coat has an over-the-shoulder cape situation. C’MON NOW!

Spoiler-ish in nature as it may be, we’re thrilled to get a first look at the fashion and Capitol “look” behind this film. It’s definitely going to be hard (perhaps impossible) to meet our Trish Summerville standards, but Kurt and Bart are doing well so far!

It seems the filming continued to take place in a pretty public area, because it wasn’t long after that that we got video of the actors, this time with the addition of Josh Hutcherson and Natalie Dormer:

And… SWEET BABY JESUS! WHAT HAPPENED TO JOSH HUTCHERSON’S HAIR?!

Peeta’s always been slightly blonder than you average blond man, but never has it been such an invasive shade of straight up yellow. Blonds don’t look like that! Did the Capitol somehow permanently fuck with his hair color during hijacking? Do you think it’s just the poor lighting? Seriously, somebody help us understand this. It hurts our eyeeeeees!

Now we need promo photos and video just to confirm that his hair is not as yellow as we think it is. For serious!

On another note, damn you Natalie Dormer for being one of like four women in the world who can rock the half-shaved head look! You’re unknowingly encouraging people other than you four to make terrible hairstyle decisions!

Sure, this is paparazzi info and not anything official. But hopefully now that SOME of the movie details are already out there, Lionsgate will actually feel compelled to release some quality looks into the film! We may not be that lucky, but a girl can hope.

Game of Mockingjay

christieAfter the long drought of no Mockingjay-related news, we finally got some, but very much on the unexpected side. Today we learn that Lily Rabe had to back out of her role as Commander Lyme due to a scheduling conflict. That’s sad news because she would have undoubtedly been awesome in the role. We were really pleased when her casting was announced back in September.

But don’t be too sad for long, because there are lots of amazing actresses in the world, and count on the Mockingjay team to find one that will undoubtedly be great as well. Gwendoline Christie, best known for her role as Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones, will be taking on the role!

brienne

Christie as Brienne of Tarth

I love Game of Thrones, and Christie’s role as Brienne is one tough woman. She’s a female knight who’s had to deal with an enormous amount of pain and bullshit for being a strong, brave woman in the sexist, oppressive world of the series. No doubt she can take a lot of her experience in that performance and channel it to her role as Lyme. She’ll be a powerful presence and I can’t wait to see her and Katniss go toe to toe.

This announcement also reveals that Lyme is in Mockingjay PART 2, there’s no mention of 1. This could be an oversight of whoever is reporting the news, or it could be another clue as to where the two movies are split. Hmm.

The Mockingjay movies already have a Game of Thrones actress on board with Natalie Dormer, though I don’t think Dormer and Christie have every had any scenes together on the show… yet?  It’s a well-timed announcement, since Season 4 of Game of Thrones begins this Sunday. So if you haven’t watched before, you’ve got some extra reason to now!

Fight on, ladies.

Locks of Mockingjay Love

Something really exciting happened at the Screen Actors Guild last night!

No, it wasn’t Jennifer Lawrence coining the term “Armpit Vagina” (aka that cease under your armpit that forms when you wear a tube top that’s too tight). Last night, it was all about the hair. Ooooooh yeah!

Seriously, who decided that was passable?!

Seriously, who decided that was passable?!

The Hunger Games’ hair and makeup may have seen their last legitimate chance at an Academy Award pass when Catching Fire wasn’t nominated, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few gems for them to focus on in Mockingjay. Besides the few unintentionally hilarious fans who have suggested that Mockingjay can’t be filmed because Jennifer Lawrence cut her hair (*gigglesnort*), we all know they’ll be working on the Katniss wig situation throughout filming. We have faith in these guys to avoid a disaster like the third Twilight movie, where Kristen Stewart’s wig was practically connected to her eyebrows at certain points in the film.

But that not even the hair and makeup we’re talking about! The prep team and Plutarch Heavensbee’s band of Capitol defectors will still be sticking to their Capitol style roots while down in District 13. We know this for a FACT, because Natalie Dormer, our Cressida, rocked this on the red carpet:

e4c084c5f2eca84f_split.jpg.xxxlarge

The half shaved head is a trend we usually avoid like the plague (it’s like you started to shave then chickened out), but we’ll make an exception because OMG IT’S FOR MOCKINGJAY!

Dormer gets all the posts for being clearly dedicated to the outrageous side of this role. We bet there’s more than the shaving on set, too! Perhaps some funky colors like Effie? Or an outlandish hairdo on that one side? OR BOTH?

The hair and makeup will only have a few people to have consistent, crazy hair and makeup so they best have a ton of fun with it! Here’s a few ideas for those characters:
