Lily Rabe

Game of Mockingjay

christieAfter the long drought of no Mockingjay-related news, we finally got some, but very much on the unexpected side. Today we learn that Lily Rabe had to back out of her role as Commander Lyme due to a scheduling conflict. That’s sad news because she would have undoubtedly been awesome in the role. We were really pleased when her casting was announced back in September.

But don’t be too sad for long, because there are lots of amazing actresses in the world, and count on the Mockingjay team to find one that will undoubtedly be great as well. Gwendoline Christie, best known for her role as Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones, will be taking on the role!

Christie as Brienne of Tarth

I love Game of Thrones, and Christie’s role as Brienne is one tough woman. She’s a female knight who’s had to deal with an enormous amount of pain and bullshit for being a strong, brave woman in the sexist, oppressive world of the series. No doubt she can take a lot of her experience in that performance and channel it to her role as Lyme. She’ll be a powerful presence and I can’t wait to see her and Katniss go toe to toe.

This announcement also reveals that Lyme is in Mockingjay PART 2, there’s no mention of 1. This could be an oversight of whoever is reporting the news, or it could be another clue as to where the two movies are split. Hmm.

The Mockingjay movies already have a Game of Thrones actress on board with Natalie Dormer, though I don’t think Dormer and Christie have every had any scenes together on the show… yet?  It’s a well-timed announcement, since Season 4 of Game of Thrones begins this Sunday. So if you haven’t watched before, you’ve got some extra reason to now!

Fight on, ladies.

Killing Jennifer Lawrence

How about that title, huh? Yeah, so the big news in the fandom, or according to my Google Alerts, is

Totally awesome fanmade poster!

Totally awesome fan made poster!

that Jennifer Lawrence, and I’m guessing probably Mahershala Ali, and Liam Hemsworth, possibly Lily Rabe as well– were involved, that is if they were in fact filming District 2 scenes, if not, welp, then I’m wrong and I will go drown my sorrows in cookies— any who, the smoke machine being used in a tunnel scene malfunctioned and choked out the actors, and probably a few of the crew as well. Heavy day on set I’d say, wouldn’t you? But no worries! Jen’s alive and well, and I’m also guessing back in Kentucky getting her post-Christmas binge on with her brothers goading her on, and her parents affectionately rolling their eyes at their children’s antics. That, or she’s stuck in a rented house in the greater Atlanta metro area, yep– still partaking in a post-Christmas binge with a choice number of family members, and friends goading her on.

I dunno, I just somehow doubt the woman took the experience to heart. Like, if she’s having nightmares, I hope they’re more Lost Smoke Monster, than billowing, choking smoke, encroaching upon her, making her eyes water, and her heart pound in her chest, a cold sweat prickling, and sliding down her back. However, if she is having the latter I hope she’s talking it out, and getting the help she needs. She’s a tough cookie, albeit eccentric, but tough, and resilient. If you want to compare though, worse, or worse if you’re thinking broadly, things have happened on film sets, or film shoots for that matter. For example: Martin Sheen nearly died whilst filming Apocalypse Now in 1978, yep he had a heart attack, and shockingly he was only 38 years old at the time. Also, the set on the same film was washed away by a Typhoon at one point, disastrous. Peter O’Toole nearly died on the set of Lawrence of Arabia— fell from a camel, which is a phrase you don’t hear everyday. Malcolm McDowell, or as you youngins know him as– the white-haired white dude in those hilarious commercials where he and James Earl Jones (gray-haired black dude, sounds like Darth Vader), reenact supposed real text or Facebook comment conversations

This is how you go temporarily blind

This is how you go temporarily blind

between young people– yeah, he went temporarily blind after filming a super, intense, torture scene in the pivotal, and classic film A Clockwork Orange. And if you want to get even more bloody, Sylvester Stallone had to be air lifted to a hospital after filming a boxing scene in Rocky IV, hot damn. Bruce (Bad Ass) Willis lost two thirds of his hearing after filming a scene in Die Hard, which is what happens when loud bangs go off very close to your ears, ouchie. Mister Brad Pitt required surgery after doing a scene in Seven, where his arm went through a car’s windshield, which was not in the script– they wrote it in afterwards. And finally a lady! Nicole Kidman broke and/ or fractured two ribs and seriously injured her knee whilst filming the spectacular film Moulin Rouge! Almost all her scenes after had to be filmed with her seated in a chair following the injuries, you get fictional doughnuts sent to you if you can point out all those scenes to me and the world at large. George (Fucking) Clooney broke his spine whilst filming little seen, but totally worth seeing, Syriana, seriously see it. Oh, and another lady! Halle Barry has suffered multiple injuries on multiple sets, several of which required schedules to be greatly altered so she could heal– let’s just rename her Halle (Accident Prone) Berry, okay? But most notably, and most tragically– Brandon Lee died of a gunshot wound on the set of the film The Crow in 1994.

Filling Out The Cast

The cast of The Hunger Games franchise is balls to the walls full of über talented lady people. I can say that with conviction, and authority now, because it’s officially true. The last few days have been a slow avalanche of casting announcements for the Mockingjay films, and one after the other have been bona fide, award nominated, winning, and just all around talented women.

Today we got our Commander Paylor with the announcement of Tony Award winning actress Patina Miller, if you don’t know who she is, click here and get to know her. Monday we got our Commander Lyme with the announcement of American Horror Story: Asylum’s Lily Rabe, and then last Friday we got the imagesannouncement of Julianne Moore taking the role of President Alma Coin. I don’t know about you, but the next female role to be cast, the expectations are now so incredibly high, I’m hoping we get another prestigious award nominee, or winner– because it’s just becoming a kind of a pleasant trend.

We already knew that the female cast of this franchise was super talented, especially with Jennifer Lawrence at the helm. But now, after already having such talents as Paula Malcolmson, who I am seriously hoping is utilized more in Catching Fire, because I don’t know if you know this– but Paula is no slouch where it comes to acting ability. Watch Showtime’s Ray Donovan, and HBOs Deadwood, as well as her stint on Sons of Anarchy, you’ll understand why I’ve said all of that. Sometimes I forget just how vast the collective female talent is in the cast, but then I remember there’s women like Jena Malone, and Amanda Plummer taking part. Maybe it’s because we haven’t actually seen Catching Fire yet, and that’s why my memory keeps getting fogged up, but in all seriousness the cast is almost something unprecedented, and I can only think of two other films cast that were just as well populated by talented women, and that’s The Hours, and Gosford Park.

Bring on the Boggs, but if we’re keeping with the trend… bring on the Fulvia Cardew, maybe we’ll get someone a million times better than Rebel Wilson.

Why Do We Always Forget About Lyme?

1208739_757525487597438_545165230_nWith Monday came another Mockingjay casting announcement: Lily Rabe will play Lyme. Now if you don’t know who Lyme is, don’t worry. You’re not the only one who’s forgotten about her. It’s been a running joke on HG Fireside Chat since for a brief moment, pretty much everyone forgot who she was when a listener asked about her. We didn’t even fancast her! And I wasn’t completely sure she was going to even make it into the movie.

So here’s a quick refresher. Remember in Mockingjay when Katniss goes to District 2, and they try to disable the Nut, leading to Katniss getting shot? Lyme was a past victor who joined the rebellion and became the Commander in District 2 during this time period.

Being a District 2 victor, it’s assumed that Lyme was a Career and even could have mentored Cato or more likely Clove. But she fought for the rebellion and was even high in rank, probably due to her victor status. As far as a physical description, Katniss remarks that she’s tall and muscular and is about a generation above her.

One reason that people seem to forget about Lyme is because she doesn’t end up voting for the Coin-proposed Hunger Games, so it is assumed she died sometime between the taking of the Nut and then. Because Katniss doesn’t say anything about her after District 2, not even an explanation for why Lyme isn’t around at the end, we as readers forgot along with her.

But hey, we won’t forget you, Lily Rabe! We’re excited to see what you can bring to fill this role out a bit. By several accounts, I hear you’re great on American Horror Story. And I may actually watch this season (I’ve been a big fat chicken and don’t like scary things).

And now I want some pie
