Mockingjay Part 2 Extras Excitement

As caught up as we are in the prospect of old school, never-before-seen footage coming our way in The Hunger Games 4-Film Collection, it’s also pretty damn exciting that we’re getting Mockingjay Part 2 special features for the first time, as well!

Today, we got not one but TWO Mockingjay Part 2 DVD extras to drool over. Observe!

First, check out the story behind Johanna’s bald cap!

We love this. LOVE IT. Why? Because Jena Malone was ready to go all way. She wanted to shave her head for ten months for five scattered days of shooting. But when that was shot down, she went through a pretty grueling bald cap process to get an authentic look. Holy fuck, that is a ride or die kind of chick if I’ve ever seen one!

We’re really glad Johanna was bald. It wasn’t necessary, but it was a stark reminder of the torture the Rebellion members received in Capitol. So bless Francis and Jena for going there, seriously!

Of course, most of these sites are trying to keep their exclusive by refusing to include embeddable video– Get ads on video embeds and get with the times, CraveOnline– so you can click the picture below to watch the second clip about the mutt attack!

Mockingjay-part-2-tigris-is-that-you-doc-connors-is-that-you-528000

While we admittedly don’t pay THE MOST attention to set design, it’s really cool to see how, even though the scene obviously required special effects, a lot of the shriek-worthy fear we experienced was actually due to a wonderful location and expert lighting. And DAMN was it effective!

There’s always a few humorous gems behind the scenes and sadly those are missing here. But fear not! We’ll devour them and every other moment when the Blu-ray comes!

Featurette Obsessions Are Totally Legit, Right? Right?!

Our Blu-Ray Extras Wish List

As we move into February, the release of Mockingjay Part 2 on Digital HD and then Blu-Ray/DVD is inevitably coming soon. Along with the benefit of being able to watch the movie over and over and over again comes the fun of digesting all the extra stuff they add in to entice you to purchase.

We expect the features to be similar to previous Hunger Games movies – audio commentary with Francis and Nina, a few deleted scenes, and lots of behind the scenes featurettes on making the film. The fact that this is the last film makes us a little antsy about what bits they add to this release versus what they choose to add to any ULTIMATE, SUPER-SHINY 4-MOVIE SET that will be coming later in the year, or in 2017, or both. You know they’ve got to hold something back for those later editions. What do they have in that treasure trove to look forward to?

So now we present our not-very-grounded-in-reality wish list of Hunger Games movie (all of ‘em) extras that we’re dying to see at some point:

if_prim_were_a_tribute__by_finsflipper-d5an7iz

Prim, what kind of nightmare sequence was this? Gary, stop holding back.

Those scenes we’ve seen in stills or BTS footage but never the actual footage. Prim in the tribute costume? Gary, what was that about? Katniss and Peeta having a chat in the tribute center. Again Gary, share that with us! Peeta getting his arm painted by the morphling. Francis, please!

Catching Fire Katniss and Peeta rooftop footage. We know something was filmed. We suppose it hit the cutting room floor early because why would you NOT include this footage as a Catching Fire extra? We’ll forgive the quality. Whatever it is, we JUST NEED TO SEE IT.

Revisions to the end of Mockingjay Part 2 after the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman. We know about the places where footage from other scenes was added. We know Haymitch reading Plutarch’s letter was a change. But we’re curious what the plan was originally, had tragedy not occurred.

1446776391-jennifer-lawrence-liam-hemsworth-hunger-games-mockingjay-2-cast-group-selfie

Don’t tell us you don’t want a cast audio-commentary. Not possible.

Cast audio-commentary. The Francis and Nina audio-commentaries give us some great insight into the making of the movies. But the fandom would completely lose their shit if Lionsgate were ever able to wrangle Jen, Josh, Liam, Woody, Liz et al into doing audio commentaries for the films.  It’s the dream, people. THE DREAM.

Everlark sex. JUST KIDDING, but with all the messages Francis gets about that from fans, we couldn’t NOT mention it. The thought of that actually being filmed makes us feel really awkward, and the inclusion of a scene of that nature would HAVE NOT fit the end of Mockingjay Part 2. If you want that, there’s a whole wide world of fan fiction to explore. BUT I would be really curious to know about the creative decisions that took place in the execution of the actual, final “real or not real” scene. As much as I hate to say it, as more time passes, I find it disappointing. Or maybe I just need to watch the movie again when it comes out and learn to let it all go.

What other extras should we be pleading for?

JJ

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Liam Hemsworth’s CUT BANK Is a Gritty Conspiracy Thriller

The Hunger Games world is mostly quiet these days, but a Hunger Games actor still has a big movie release happening today! Liam Hemsworth’s Cut Bank is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital HD today. We’re celebrating with a review AND something for you!

First off, let’s freak out over the amazing cast: Liam Hemsworth stars alongside Teresa Palmer (Cut Bank is not to be confused with Love and Honor, another straight-to-DVD release they co-starred in), but we’ve also got John Malkovich, Billy Bob Thorton, Bruce Dern, Oliver Platt, and Michael Stuhlbarg on board. And it’s easy to see why all these great actors signed on– This film has a definite allure to it!

cut-bank-poster-11Dwayne McLaren (Hemsy!) wants nothing more than to get out of his small idealistic Americana hometown– Cut Bank, Montana. While recording a video of his girlfriend (Palmer), the two witness the brutal murder of an elderly postman, Georgie Wits (Dern). Better yet, they catch it on tape. Now, Dwayne is set to gain $100,000 in reward money from a Postal Service agent (Platt). It doesn’t take long to realize that there’s much more to the video than anyone suspects and the local sheriff (Malkovich) isn’t equipped to deal with the first murder that’s ever occurred in town.

Even worse? The loss of the postman and his parcels has incidentally set off the only person in town who’s a genuine threat to society.

In the DVD special features, screenwriter Robert Patino describes Cut Bank as a 70s-style conspiracy thriller. It’s pretty accurate. It’s not just about the grand scheme. It’s about the unexpected ways that scheme can go horribly, horribly wrong. But the movie has its hits and misses– There’s some amazing character acting, but it starts off slow. Things pick up and get intriguing, but you never quite get the big Tarantino-style “OMG WHAT JUST HAPPENED?” moment that you anticipate. Still, there’s a decent amount of suspense and twists that’ll have insanely curious to see how to all plays out.

With the actors involved, it’s no surprise that the characters are superb. The script goes for dark humor and doesn’t always hit the mark, but the actors make the best of it and develop unique, fun characters. Extra points go to Michael Stuhlbarg– an actor whose name you might not know but whose face you probably recognize– for expertly playing the creepiest creepster in existence, Derby Milton. The performances and the aesthetics of Cut Bank really made the kitschy town stuck in the 1950s come to life and an amusing, believable way.

Cut Bank is plenty enjoyable, all crime and conspiracy with a touch of modern-day Western. It’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you want to see Liam Hemsworth play a more in-depth, calculating role than Gale Hawthorne.

Want to watch? Well, you could win the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Combo Pack!

Beakless Beakniss

As DVD time approaches, we’ve made a small but exciting discovery.

See, we love it when it seems the movie studios are listen to what’s being said in the fandom, and in this one case, they seemingly listened and corrected themselves.

Just before the release of Mockingjay Patt 1 came a poster that became know in the fandom as “Beakniss”:

BxLzOO2CQAIVTRD

Named so because of the giant and painfully obvious beak from the Mockingjay pin protruding out of Katniss’ neck. It upped the WTF factor of the poster by about 60%. We weren’t quite sure how that sucker made it past an entire creative design team and into production, but it did.

To make matters worse, the Beakniss image was the main promo for the film. So Katniss had a beak stabbing through her neck in movie theater cutouts, giant banners… everywhere!

Thankfully, as DVD time rolled around, someone at Lionsgate realized how painful the image is. Because the regular Blu-ray/DVD cover is…

the-hunger-games-mockingjay-part-1-blu-ray-cover-46

BEAKLESS BEAKNISS!

Perhaps a lot of people won’t notice or care, but to us, it’s a major relief. We’re glad we don’t have to stare that poorly placed background beak down every time we want to watch the blu-ray!

Mockingjay Part 1 Edition Additions

If you’re like us, DVD Special Editions are IMPORTANT!

Yes, seeing the movie over and over is great. But the opportunity to dig into the experience, get behind-the-scenes perspectives, see the running gags on set, watch deleted scenes, etc is priceless.

Well, not priceless… if someone wanted me to pay $100 for a special edition DVD, we’d tell them exactly where they could shove it. But you get the point!

Now, our special editions have been unveiled and they. look. glorious! Dive into the details with us, okay?! Start off with all that’s included in the Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack (and thus the Target edition) courtesy of DWTC!

THE TARGET EDITION

677x451xTarget-Mockingjay-special-edition1.jpg.pagespeed.ic.kXwGDtpFKq

We start with Target, which always has the bomb special edition that everyone actually wants in comparison to the others. Because Target offers all the features you’re going to get out of this film until they introduce some sort of MAC DADDY EDITION at least five years from now.

On top of that mega-list of features, Target with also have a whopping 45 minutes of additional footage! This sucker is like the extended edition!

They’ve also got another fabric poster available if you pre-order, which straight up makes us gigglesnort. Does anyone really want the fabric poster? EVER?! Why do they still think that’s a selling point?

THE WALMART EDITION

450x450xWalmart-alternative-Cover-Mockingjay.jpg.pagespeed.ic.ZYon7HLMOi

This cover irks us. Cressida is being amped up in this movie in comparison to the book. But so much that she’s cover art? WE THINK NOT. We’re not anti-Cressida, but this is kinda ridic.

This edition will have the basic DVD features– Audio Commentary with Director Francis Lawrence and Producer Nina Jacobson, Deleted Scenes, and a Sneak Peek of Insurgent– plus a behind-the-scenes featurette from Vudu. How long, entailing what? We don’t know! You’d think they’d want to give us that information!

THE BEST BUY EDITION

259x370xBest-Buy-Mockingjay-steelbook1.jpg.pagespeed.ic.lsPUAaJKLj

Speaking of mystery… Enter the Steelbook Edition!

Other than the basic three DVD features, once again, we literally have no idea what is going on with this. Other than a shiny, shiny steelbook cover. And that’s enough for some people, so it’s cool!

The last steelbook came with a freebie ticket for Divergent, since the two films do technically market to the same audience, but whether that’s worth it to you is a personal choice. I like mostly Divergent, but wouldn’t buy the steelbook just for a ticket.

So there you have it, ladies and gents! The special editions!

Will you go for one of these babies or will the regular Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack do it for you?

The Mockingjay Part 1 DVD Dish

After a never ending string of rumors, Lionsgate has finally confirmed the Digital HD and DVD release details for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 in the US.

Of course, they did it with a bit of trolling, because no promotion for this movie has come without any trolling.

THAT DAMN HANGING TREE REMIX! Is the beat-thumping dance music actually relevant to the story or its sales? Nope, it’s just Trollsgate at work!

“Fine, you know what? We’ll confirm the dates! But we’re going to put your through PAIN as we do so! MUAHAHAHAHA!”

Still, the dates are here!

DIGITAL HD: February 17

We’ll admit, we’re still not up on the Digital HD trend. We use streaming services like On Demand and Netflix, but actually buying up our own collection of Digital HD movies to watch on various screens and devices? Naaaahhhh! It’s cheaper, but you usually just don’t get the same special feature goodness that we absolutely require.

These days it’s really tempting, though, because everything comes out on Digital HD about 2 weeks earlier. Two and a half weeks in this case! Ouch!

DVD AND BLU-RAY: MARCH 6

91q1g9j7hmL._SX385_When it was originally rumored that the DVD would be out on March 3, we figured it would actually by the 6th. Why? DVD release parties!

LG did release parties throughout the country for both The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, albeit not too many for either. They cover a few of the major city areas. People in the Northeast and middle America know not to get their hopes up. But still, we get to see all the fun coverage after the fact.

We have yet to hear about the important details: THE EDITIONS!

Each will come with its own special-ness. Target tends to rock the special features selection– and we’re hoping they do again so our collection kinda matches– while Best Buy will do its steelbook thing and Wal-Mart will pull off something (hopefully not an awkward triple feature with Part 1 only, because that would be horrendous).

Want in? You can pre-order now!

This is only the beginning of the DVD news, folks! It can only get better from here!
